Orbitz Engaged is a corporate citizenship program that supports matters of social importance and causes that help make the world a better place to travel.
Brand USA: Established in 2010 as the nation's first global marketing effort to promote the United States as a premier travel destination, Brand USA has experienced great success with its mission to increase international visitation to the United States.
Brand USA initiatives are funded at no cost to U.S. taxpayers by working in close partnership with the travel industry to maximize the economic and social benefits of travel. Orbitz Worldwide helps to enhance the marketing efforts of U.S. destinations by donating in-kind online advertising that provides extended reach to destinations’ marketing programs and enables them to reach travelers who are in the midst of making buying decisions. Ultimately our customers, our supplier partners and the nation’s tourism industry all stand to benefit from successful marketing efforts that promote international travel to the U.S., so we are proud to work closely with Brand USA on their mission to attract international visitors.
The Code: As a socially responsible company and signatory of the ECPAT-USA’s Tourism Child-Protection Code of Conduct, Orbitz Worldwide is committed to combating commercial sexual exploitation of children. Orbitz Worldwide stands firm in our resolve to create awareness of sex trafficking of children by utilizing our professional resources in the travel and tourism industry. We ask our business partners to do the same.
Military and Veterans Hiring: Orbitz was one of the original members of the travel industry’s coalition to support the Joining Forces initiative launched in 2012 to encourage the hiring of military veterans and military spouses. To date more than 200 customer service agents have been recruited to assist Orbitz customers and support various business units. Our industry-leading customer care unit, which provides airline schedule change alerts to our customers, is staffed by former Defense Department air traffic controllers who bring skills and efficiencies that help our travelers around the world. We continue to support this initiative through our internal hiring practices and our collaboration with vendors.
Sustainable Travel & Tourism Best Practices: By promoting hybrid rental cars and eco-friendly hotels on our Green Getaways site, our company is focused on making travel more sustainable for the communities that welcome our travelers into their cities, towns and villages. Locally in our hometown of Chicago, the Orbitz team is a perennial leader in the annual Bike Commuter Challenge that encourages alternative forms of transportation. Through workplace incentives, over 55 percent of employees at our Chicago corporate headquarters routinely take public transportation to work each day, and globally many of our employees also rely on public transportation to commute to work.
Disaster Relief and Volunteer Vacations: Orbitz is committed to supporting the tourism communities that help make our industry possible and providing travel support to respond to natural disasters. Our company has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in travel to organizations like the United Way and Doctors Without Borders to respond to events like the 2012 earthquake in Haiti to send doctors, volunteers and relief workers to aid in immediate and long-term disaster relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts. After events like the Gulf Oil spill, Hurricane Sandy and forest fires in Colorado, Orbitz joined with local tourism and government Volunteer Vacations that allow travelers to give back to communities in need.
Regardless of the cause, all Orbitz Worldwide employees may take two paid Volunteer Release Days per calendar year, in order to support any organizations with which they are personally involved.
Community Support: As proud Chicagoans, Orbitz is dedicated to keeping top technology talent close to home and mentoring the next generation of technologists.
Orbitz is a member of ChicagoNEXT, which seeks to positively impact new venture formation in Chicago and to accelerate the growth and/or expansion ofestablished businesses, and we are a proud partner of Urban Alliance, an organization that empowers under-resourced youth to aspire, work, and succeed through paid internships, formal training, and mentoring. In December 2012, Chicago Tech Academy High School awarded its "Beyond the Books Award" to Orbitz in recognition of the company's mentoring efforts.
Furthermore, Orbitz Worldwide routinely donates high quality, refurbished laptops to organizations including Chicago Public Schools, United Neighborhood Organization, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Arlington Free Clinic, Pilotage International, Avenues to Independence, Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory School, and One World Adoption Services.
Promoting a Culture of Inclusion: Orbitz proudly stands for non-discrimination policies in the workplace and the community. In fact, Orbitz is the only company to win two GLAAD Media Awards in Advertising and we are the only online travel agency to earn a perfect score on Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index for seven consecutive years.
